Q&A Monday Q: How do you come up with the names of your characters? A: It all depends. With main characters it seems I spend as much time agonizing over names as I would over an actual child. I have a whole shelf of dog-eared baby name books. Not only does the characters name have to sound good in my head, it has to be easily pronounced, and it has to look good on the page. My latest requirement is that it be quick and easy to type, as well. And, of course, the name has to suit the characters personality. Secondary characters, on the other hand, will get their names from all different sources because I cant afford to devote a lot of time to that process. So, if I have a character pop up as Im writing a scene, their name might come from a mash-up of names from the phone book or from whatever show happens to be on the TV in the background. The heroine of the up-coming COLD COLD HEART, Dana Nolan, was a minor character in THE 9TH GIRL, and was named after the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Dana White, who happened to be on television at the moment I needed a name!
