Q: I have taken other types of yoga classes. How will this be different? A: #ashtanga yoga is a tradition that is passed down directly from teacher to student. The AAYS program belongs to this specific lineage and offers authentic teachings learned from the source of Ashtanga yoga in Mysore, India. There are six series of Ashtanga yoga. Everyone begins with the Primary Series. The Primary Series is slowly learned, one posture at a time through a combination of Led classes and Mysore classes. Asanas are practiced in a specific order using vinyasa, bandha, breathing, and gazing points. “Led” is a simple guided group class. Everyone starts at the same time with the teacher counting the vinyasas in Sanskrit. Quality of practice is more important than quantity of asanas; therefore, beginners will be asked to rest at the appropriate moment. Over time and with continuous consistent daily practice, the quality of practice will grow and with it, the asanas. There is no music. These classes are open to seasoned vinyasa yoga students and healthy beginners. “Mysore” refers to individual instruction within a group environment. Rather than a set start and end time, students arrive to practice at their convenience during Mysore hours. Everyone is practicing what they have been taught to the rhythm of their own breath, punctuated by the instructor quietly giving physical assists and a few words here and there. Even if you have previous yoga experience, your first days of Mysore practice will be under an hour. You will learn a few fundamentals, then come back the next day and maybe learn some more. While at the beginning it can take some time for things to “pick up”, because of the highly individual nature of the method, there is a real opportunity to go deeper into the practice than in an average group class. Mysore students aim to practice asanas daily with Saturdays, Moon Days, and the first three days of menstruation as days of rest. Mysore is for everyone. ashtangayogaalbuquerque/FAQs
