QB BUBBA MORENO - GOTTA LOVE THE NAME! - RALLIES TURLOCK TO UPSET OF PREVIOUSLY PERFECT CLOVIS WEST Black Hat Football started telling you about Bubba Moreno during the 7-on-7 season this summer. The Turlock High quarterback led the Bulldogs to some nice performances, but we have to admit, even we’re a bit surprised by the skills he’s shown these first three weeks. It will be tough for the senior to top Friday’s game, however. Moreno led Turlock to 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and a 27-20 stunner over previously unbeaten Clovis West at Joe Debely Stadium. It pushes Turlock to 2-1, with the loss a one-point decision to Oakdale – now 3-0 – in the Mustangs’ always-inhospitable Corral. Clovis West (2-1), which throttled Central California Conference favorite Merced 49-39 in this season’s opener, led Turlock 20-0 in the second quarter. The rest of the night belonged to the Bulldogs, with Moreno leading the ‘O’ and Alex Pallios (10 tackles), Zach Moore (2.5 tackles for loss and Jeffrey Hines (INT) leading the defense. If you believe in comparing scores: Turlock beats Clovis West by 6, two weeks after Clovis West beat Merced by 10. Turloc hosts Merced in Week 9 – the last major conference game for each team. Moreno (13 of 22, 145 yards, 3 TDs) did all his damage in the second half, and much of that came in the final quarter. He threw TD passes to Bear Padilla (6 yards), Hines (13 yards) and Padilla again (3 yards). The final TD snapped a 21-all tie and left Clovis West dazed and confused on that long bus trip back home. Moreno also ran for 69 yards, a nice follow-up to his first two weeks – he has 409 yards passing, 251 rushing and 7 TDs in his first thee games of 2014. Clovis West QB Kordell Hoffman (22 of 39, 170 yards, TD) was just the opposite, getting his significant stats in the first half. Hines’ INT came with the Bulldogs trailing 21-13 early in the fourth quarter and set up Moreno and the ‘Dogs at the 22-yard line. Hines (4 catches, 86 yards) then caught the TD t make it 21-19 and Moreno’s 2-point toss to Padilla (3 catches, 27 yards) tied the game – making the loud crowd part of the game. Moreno then hit Padilla with 2 minutes left for the lead, then the defense force a four-and-out to seal the deal. (A tip of The Hat to Turlock’s Dave Moore for providing Black Hat Football with great stats.)
