QUEENSTOWN LAKES COUNCIL MOVES ON CONFERENCE CENTRE QLDC has agreed to progress the conference centre project in Queenstowns old camp ground. The approval includes a useful set of conditions. Good to see the funding to shift more toward commercial contributions and away from residents. Excellent that the need to adjust the long-term plan has now been included. Even better that the project will not get a final approval until the entire funding model is in place and an operator is secured. From my perspective as a life-long Queenstowner: It would be better still if the strategy to re-align the state highway, from its current Stanley St-Shotover St-lakeside route to along Mann St and pass the entrance to centre, was also agreed to and funding secured so that the increased traffic to and from the centre doesnt impact on the town too much. A realistic affordable housing initiative, significantly beyond that envisaged in the proposed housing accord approach, to replace the cabins that will make way for the conference centre should also now be developed with some urgency.
