Queen’s Baton Relay A resident from Waltham Forest will carry the Commonwealth Games baton through London next month. Jim Howell, who has been a teacher in the borough for more than 40 years, is the official Waltham Forest baton bearer. Jim was educated in the borough and competed in both rugby and athletics for his school – Leyton County High. He then went to university before returning to the borough as a teacher in 1969. He will receive the baton at the Velodrome, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, on Sunday 8 June. Residents are encouraged to join Jim on his journey by taking part in a mass walk, run or cycle to the Olympic Park from Leyton Jubilee Park. There’s no need to register, you can turn up on the day. Registration opens at 10.30am and a short warm-up will start at 11am. Walkers will leave at 11.30am, runners depart at 11.45am, and cyclists at 12noon. It’s hoped everyone will arrive at the Velodrome, approximately two miles from Leyton Jubilee Park, at about 1pm.
