Quest For Knowledge Mini History Lesson For Today: On August 18, 1590, John White, the governor of the first English settlement in the New World - Roanoke Island Colony, located in present day North Carolina - returned to the settlement after a supply trip to England. Upon arriving it became clear that the Colony was deserted. Not a trace of the more than 100 colonists be had left could be found. The only clue White was able to discover was the word “Croatoan”, which was carved into the camp’s palisade. The conclusion White drew from this was that the Colonists had moved to Croatoan Island, which was located 50 miles away. The Island was then searched vigorously, but no signs of the settlers were found. Even today the reason of the colonist’s disappearance has never been discovered, although many theories have been offered.
