Question: Is silent prayer as powerful as praying out loud? Does it matter? Answer: Well, yes and no. Silent prayer can be as powerful as praying out loud (definitely), because God doesn’t hear you because you are speaking louder, neither does he not hear you because you are speaking silently. So silent prayer—and by silent prayer I hope what you mean is praying under your voice but you are talking. If silent prayer is meant by being quiet and looking with your mouth shut and thinking, then that’s not prayer at all. In prayer, you talk. You may not be heard by someone sitting or standing close to you, but God will hear you because you are talking. See, there is a difference between talking and thinking. So, if you are praying silently, God will hear you as much as he will hear the one talking out loud. But, here is the difference, because you asked “does it matter?” Yes, it does matter. There is a time to pray silently, and there is a time to pray aloud. You pray aloud when you are inspired to and often it will be in a place where the spirit of God also feels or deems right to do so, [like] in an environment like a church or a gathering of other believers or a private place where you are not going to be a nuisance to some other person. Apart from that, there may be times that even in a place that you might be a nuisance to someone else, the Spirit of God inspires you to talk out loud because of the circumstances; not because God is not going to hear, but because of the circumstances; we can’t rule that out. When that happens, you have to go ahead, but there will be a result that will prove that it was God who was in it. So, there are times to pray silently, and there are times to pray out loud. The bible shows us both, and that is why we know that both of them are right. Jesus prayed silently, and there were times he prayed out loud, and he was heard so they wrote down what he said. Other times they didn’t hear what he said, so they couldn’t write; they just said he prayed. And then of course, the disciples also; they prayed silently, and they prayed out loud. So, we do both.
