Question: Why does my dog get so reactive when he walks on a leash? .... “When your dog is attached to a leash, the situation can become volatile. A leash removes your dog’s ability to flee a threatening situation (assuming he wants to run away). Because he is attached to you, if he wants to make an approaching dog stop coming toward him, his only option is to bluff him away by growling and barking, or biting him if he gets too close. If you see someone walking a dog off-leash, don’t hesitate to take responsibility for your own dog’s safety by politely calling out to the other owner to call his dog away from yours so the dogs don’t meet inappropriately. Don’t be flustered if the owner tells you his dog is friendly. Tell him yours isn’t (whether that is true or not) and ask him to call his dog back again. If your dog is truly reactive carry an umbrella with you and pop it in front of approaching dog. You need to condition your dog to it first. Alternatively, you can carry a bag of treats with you and toss a handful of them behind approaching dog. This might give you some time to turn around and leave.
