Question about YouTube database design: As you know, every video - TopicsExpress

Question about YouTube database design: As you know, every video on YouTube has a video id that you can see in the URL, something like w2itwFJCgFQ for example. Why would they use something like this, instead of an incremental numeric ID? Wouldnt it be a performance problem to look up a string instead of a number? I know YouTube probably doesnt use a database table in a traditional sense but I cant think of a situation where string based ID would perform better or even similar to a numeric primary key.
