Question in dialects. If Haleeb (milk) is Laban in the Egyptian - TopicsExpress

Question in dialects. If Haleeb (milk) is Laban in the Egyptian dialect, what is Laban called (the yogurt drink, e.g Ayran)? I just remembered this cute story by my Egyptian teacher when she first moved to Oman. Her daughter was still a baby, she went to the nearby store to buy some baby food. She asked the old Omani man at the counter where the baby food was, and he replied Mashi (which means Okay in Egyptian, but in Omani means theres none), so she waited a while and he didnt move. She asked him again, and he replied: Mashi! in a sterner tone, to which she replied: then show me where it is! This went on for a while and both got so irritated and confused by each other, till the man realized it was a difference in dialect and explained to her what Mashi meant in Omani. :-) I found it so funny.
