Question of the Day-December 29 2014 I had to take out the shredded leaves from the containers because it was not possible to keep them moist and to turn them. So I am making big piles in the ground and turning them with a shovel. They have become really hot but I think that its not done yet, because I can see many little broken leaf parts. Does it look like vermicompost? Mike, what are your thoughts about nordic baltic peat moss? A provider told me that with this type of peat moss I didnt need to add perlite to the Compost + perlite + peat moss mixture. Hector in Guatemala Mike says: In-ground composting makes sense in hot, dry climes. A pitchfork would work better than a shovel and a compost aerator (a nifty hand held tool) would work better than a fork. Compost is done when it looks like rich black soil--yes, like worm castings. Perlite rules and rocks; hes just a peat moss salesman....
