Question of the week? I have a white sweater that I left outside - TopicsExpress

Question of the week? I have a white sweater that I left outside to dry in the sun and the side facing up turned yellow. What happened? Answer: Many of today’s bright white linens and garments have been treated with optical brighteners. These are usually fluorescent dyes. Sunlight, chlorine bleach and other whitening agents break the brighteners down and can make them turn yellow. So there you have it. Some of today’s bright whites are just optical illusions, so to speak. Drying your garments in the shade or in doors is recommended.
