Questions posed to author Colette Bezio today during book group when we discussed the WRITING of The Witches of Castle Crabapple: 1—We described your writing style as creative and imaginative. You write like WE know everything already and we are filling in the spots. How would you describe your writing style? Minimal description, I like to get right into the action. 2—In Chapter 18, how did Fume get out of the chicken spell so fast? Druzilla underestimated Fume’s powers and did not know that Fume had actually been practicing her magic. 3—Were there any special books you read for writing this book? I had a lifetime of reading fantasy. I did no research. Fantasy is wonderful because you just make up your own world. 4—Who are some of your favorite writers? George R. R. Martin; Robert Jordan; Dianna Wynne Jones; P. G. Wodehouse particularly Blandings Castle. 5—How did you develop your rich vocabulary? I have had a lifetime of reading. The more you read, the more words you use. I would say read older books. Read some books from the 1800’s. Authors of that time loved to show off how they could write. Some titles that come to mind are Vanity Fair, Sherlock Holmes, Gulliver’s Travels, books by Jane Austen. Older books were not “dumbed down.” Make an effort to reach for the word that says what you are really trying to say! 6—Are the two words in Chapter 12 “real”? Yes, insipience means beginning ; xerophilous means thriving in or tolerant or characteristic of a xeric (lacking moisture) environment.
