Quick story: Musicians Have Their Own Sense of Fraternity/Sorority Privileges. I experienced something this past Sunday at Watts Winery in Lodi, CA that I will never forget as a musician or person. My performance was scheduled to start at 5 pm. I arrived at 2 pm to load-in, setup, and soundcheck. After successfully testing my horn, I placed it back in the bag. Then, I picked it back up to run through some more songs only to experience no sound! I discovered the spring on my Eb Palm key broke. Dont know how it happen, but I was in trouble. No music store was opened, plus we were located deep in wine country. So, I was able to rig it with tape but would have to consciously remind myself to play around that palm key. Anyway, the promoter was able to reachout to contact a saxophonist who so happened to be home for one day before traveling again on Monday. This guys name is Ron Moton who happens to be touring with ConFunkshun along with his solo work as well. This brother went out of his way and brought me his Yanigasawa soprano! Before he came out, he asked his wife which of the two saxes should be loan. His wife said give him the best. FB family, the horn I borrowed from this gentlemen cost more than some 2014 cars fresh out of the box. I was very nervous in playing it, because I didnt want to accidentally bang his horn, etc. Anyway, the sax was sweet! It was a Cadillac!! After the show, I asked him why and how did you build up the nerves to loan me your best? He said it simply felt like the right thing to do. That answer took me back to my fraternity days in college. As a common core philosophy, you should help someone whether they are near or from afar, regardless of class or status. That musician looked out for me regardless of musical experience (or lack thereof), status, and geographical location not knowing anything about me. Thank God for Ron Moton on Sunday, September 28, 2014......
