Quoting my friend Deborah Teramis Christian here: Women in the workforce: interesting Economist article here about American workplace bias against work/family balance, plus discussion of the hit women take economically and career-wise if they leave employment to care for young children. The US has the worst family policies and employment practices on record among leading industrialized nations--follow links in this article to interesting related reading. Especially irritating/eye-opening, this illustration of the unconscious general "maternal wall" bias against employed mothers (from book by Joan Williams, linked in article): "[W]hen researchers gave subjects identical resumes that differed in only one respect—one, but not the other, mentioned membership in the PTA [Parent Teacher Association]—the mothers were 79% less likely to be hired and 100% less likely to be promoted. They were also held to higher performance and punctuality standards if they were hired." (from Reshaping the Work-Family Debate: Why Men and Class Matter, by Joan Williams)
