RACE DAY REPORT FROM BEVERLEY! Race day: Smile you’re almost there! Sunday was D-day for me, were the last nine weeks of training enough to get me around Cambridge half marathon or not? We had the most glorious day, spring was certainly in the air, if not the steps of 4,500 runners too! We lined up on the start at 9.30am prompt and off we went. For the first 7 miles I steadily kept over taking with a few little pushes and I was really finding my stride. Running through the ancient streets and down the backs with views of Kings College, it was all very quintessentially Cambridge! Between 8-10 miles I kept it steady but also was approached by runners keen to learn about Save the Cord Foundation and it’s work – and I managed to have a conversation with these delightful folk (in hindsight perhaps I could have been working a little harder here!). I handed out my magical sweets to those in need of a boost but always keeping running. Having trained in much cooler, rainier and windier conditions the heat somewhat overcame me and 11-12 miles felt quite slow and labored. But as I was trying to find that last glimmer of energy there were my support crew cheering me to the finish line and with 100 yards to go I found that essential last wind and made a sprint for the finish! So I did it! I ran every step and I enjoyed it, a really great day. It was also great to get out and spread the word of the work at the Foundation. And, well I might just carry on to do some more races over the coming months! For now though I am enjoying just a couple of days rest and starting my new role in open innovation for the bioscience community. It has been a great experience and I wanted to thank Charis and the team for supporting my efforts every step of the way too. Who knows what might be to come over 2014….
