RANT: I think that modern horror is not where I would like it to be. The critic side of me quickly becomes bored watching modern horror movies. I feel that horror film creators feel the need to force a story, but who cares? Generally, no one watches a horror film to focus on a story. Paranormal Activity is a horrible offender of this, causing their movies to look silly. Additionally, jump scares have become very predictable. Wanna scare your audience? DONT give warnings when something scary is about to happen. Finally, the scary child thing is worn out now. No more. Using childrens playthings to evoke fear anymore, its unoriginal and is almost always executed poorly. Part of scaring your viewer is ambiguity, fear of the unknown. Oh my God! WHAT IS THAT!? By having the films antagonist be an unknown creature, you add shock value since the viewer cannot immediately comprehend what theyre looking at. Theyre imagination becomes their worst enemy. Rant over.
