RAPID HEART BEAT/PALPITATIONS/TACHYCARDIA TACHYCARDIA: It is when the heart rate in resting position exceeds 100 beats per minute. PALPTATIONS: it is a condition when one feels the heart racing. This can be felt in the region of throat, neck or chest. CAUSES: - This condition can be due to an electrolyte imbalance, E.g. Low potassium levels. - Abnormalities in the heart valve. - Tachycardia can arise due to caffeine, anxiety, febrile illness or nebulizers. - It can be drug induced as well. - Menopause is also another reason for palpitations. Here a decreased level of serum oestrogen and an increased level of FSH/LH help confirm the cause. - Thyrotoxicosis: there is weight loss, irritability, loose frequent stools and goiter. There are marked palpitations. Confirmation can be made by blood testing, which shows an increased level of Free T4 and or an increased level of Free T3 and a decreased level of TSH. - Caffeine, nicotine intake, substance abuse, fever and exercise can also cause palpitations. ROLE OF HOMEOPATHY IN PALPITATIONS: If there is no underlying cause, counseling can help resolve the problem. Meditation, exercise and practicing yoga and breathing techniques help to a great extent. If the above methods don’t respond well. A well chosen constitutional medicine acts on the underlying cause and helps cure the disease.
