RARITY SEASON CONTINUES: TOWNSENDS SOLITAIRE A western bird of mountain pine forests, the Townsends Solitaire is a rarity in Maine, with approximately a half dozen sightings in the last ten years. Maine hosted a one day wonder on Hermit Island, south of Bath, in October of this year, and now we have been treated to a second, more accommodating bird, at Florida Lake in Freeport, which has been lingering since November 22nd. Townsends Solitaires are generally associated with berry crops, as does this one, which favors a particular Winterberry bush and spends time in a Multiflora Rose tangle. A large thrush, it more closely resembles a bluebird in size and shape. An upright percher, it has a small head with a thick neck and short bill and sports a bold white eye-ring.. It is overall gray in color with salmon colored slashes near the tips of the wings and features a longish tail. It was worth the three hour wait. Go see it!
