REFLECTING ON THE ADAMAWA 2014 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION: THE CASE OF MOHAMMED BUBA MARWA EX-LAGOS STATE MILAD. His Excellency Mohammed Buba Marwa provide good opportunity for the people of Adamawa State in North-East Nigeria the unique opportunity to have a taste of transformational governance and people-oriented Leadership. The bulk of legacies of quality governance that all of us are speaking so eloquently about in Lagos State-the centre of excellence really started under the able visionary Leadership of My good friend, Gen, Mohammed Burba Marwa rtd., (He was my friend through his good governance initiatives as MILAD Lagos State) His legacies are many. The Buba Marwa we knew was a detribalized Nigerian. He introduced among others, the popular Marwa Tricycle ‘keke’ popularly known as ‘keke Marwa’ later turned into ‘keke Napep’ under Papa Obasanjo’s government. The Keke was originally introduced by Marwa for rural dwellers who were denied access to affordable transportation. Its introduction significantly alleviated the sufferings of rural dwellers in area of moving their Farm products to the nearest markets. Secondly, here was a man who was prudent in the handling of government funds. Marwa although copied the direct labour initiative from Prince of hope in Lagos State, Chief Adeniji Adele and late Maria Sokenu of the people’s bank of Nigeria. Many public roads were fixed through direct engagements of hitherto unemployed youths in repairs of the then decaying infrastructure in Lagos State. Buba Marwa is a scholar with impeccable public service records. He was Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa. He was military attaché before he was given the opportunity to serve as the Governor of Lagos State. His own anti-corruption initiative brought real succor to the common man in Lagos State. He is tested and can also be trusted. You will recall that several assassination attempts were made on his life by his envious detractors. They tried to eliminate him when the perceived him as being very brilliant and ambitious officer in the Army. The best approach to fight corruption is to deal with it from the source. This was Buba Marwa’s strategy as the then Military Administrator of Lagos State. Many area boys were taken off the streets of Lagos through his visionary Leadership initiatives. This forms very little parts of his recorded achievements I can remember now. Even at that this legacies have not been sustained by successive administrations in Lagos State. The Area boys are still busy harassing, maiming, attacking and molesting motorist and collecting their own illegal private revenue as a parallel government in Lagos State. They stand at various bus stops with the support of various gangs hanging around the corners. If you refused to give them money, you may be doing so at the risk to your life! This is notwithstanding the fact that the governor is a learned silk with sound knowledge of the law and enforcement procedures, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria!
