REPORT FROM THE BALI CODEX MEETING (CCNFSDU) -November 28, 2014: The 36th meeting of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses ended Friday with much anger and acrimony as the NHF stood its ground to insert into the record its previously made comments about the dangerous ingredients in the so-called Follow-Up Formulas being given to infants who should already be transitioning to other foods as well as the dangers of carrageenan. Despite the best efforts of the Chairwoman and powerful Codex delegations to sanitize the record and omit any such references from the Final Report, the NHF stood its ground and, with the respective support of Senegal and Bangladesh, was able to prevail. This followed NHFs successful 5-year-long effort to stop Codex from dumbing-down the recommended daily intake for Vitamin C from 60mg/day down to 45 mg/day. Instead, this Committee meeting RAISED the level to 100mg/day! (Not ideal, but a far cry from what had been originally proposed when NHF stopped it back in the 2009 meeting.) Generally, with some notable exceptions such as Senegal and the very remarkable and outspoken Bangladesh, the delegates showed no interest in optimizing health but instead were completely fixated on following the rules or in simply not making any waves. Thailand was especially small-minded in this regard, actually mocking NHFs attempts to have a more transparent Report with fuller disclosure, calling our science nonsense. The head of the Thai delegation - Professor Kraisid Tontisirin - was especially small-minded with his obsession with rubber-stamping Codex/JECFA science and never looking beyond it to consider how humanity can be truly helped nutritionally. Instead, he preferred to ridicule his opponents. A modest little man, with much to be modest about, he does a disservice to the World. Further reports on what happened at this meeting will follow. But, all in all, it was successful and the Federation thanks each and every one of you for your support and especially thanks those who funded this trip so as to truly make a difference for 7 billion individuals! - Scott Tips
