RESPECT I learned a lesson on respect straight from a master, - TopicsExpress

RESPECT I learned a lesson on respect straight from a master, Derek Jeter. In the late summer of 2001, I attended a Kansas City Royals game, hosting the Yankees. I was raised and taught to strongly dislike the Yankees, yet not to do so proactively. My father, Jim Crowther, also taught my brother and me proper sportsmanship. Never to boo or use profanity towards the opposing team. So, I was inebriated behind home plate with Dan Adams. (In those days they never checked our tickets after the 5th inning.) Derek Jeter was waiting on deck. I raised up my middle finger close to my face and directed it with a smirk towards Derek Jeter. Dan saw and urged me to stop. Derek Jeter, between warmup swings, glanced over the crowd and caught my rudeness. He smirked back nonchalantly and literally shrugged it off. Moments later Derek Jeter cracked a triple to right center. From third base, he looked straight at me and tipped his helmet. It was like a forgiving Thank You. My heart sank instantly. I instantly held a heap of respect for Derek Jeter and further respect for sports and atheletes. Now, I have no shame or regret for my negative actions. Rather, I have pride in knowing I have learned a valuable lesson in life. Thank you Derek Jeter.
