RESULTS 31st AUGUST Amateurs: Ahly Perth 2-3 Caversham AFC Reserves: Ahly Perth 1-6 Caversham AFC Socials: Caversham AFC 1-3 Quinns FC The Caversham amateurs extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a gritty 3-2 win over Ahly Perth at Butterworth Park yesterday. Caversham took a while to settle into the match, however the visitors had the first clear cut chance on 8 minutes, as a Bailey cross was flicked on by Rob McGuigan, however Fish’s reaction shot from 6 yards flew over the bar. On 15 minutes the home side took the lead as a quick break saw an Ahly forward dance around two defenders and beat Luke Knowles at his back post with a well taken finish for 1-0. To add to Caversham’s woes, Zac Li limped off with a hamstring injury shortly afterwards and was replaced by Steve Finch. Cam Wright was moved to the right wing, and his pace continued to cause problems for Ahly, and it was a move on the right that led to Caversham’s equaliser as big Fish was brought down and a penalty awarded. Colm “I’m on pens from now on” White could only scuff his shot onto the post, however Finchy was first on hand to stick the rebound into the net for 1-1, which is how it remained at half time. Half time instructions from The Gaffer had an immediate effect, as Caversham took the lead five minutes into the second half, as McGuigan headed home a Colm White free kick. It looked like the visitors had made the game safe on the hour mark, as Finchy was played through and lobbed the keeper for 3-1, however Caversham hearts were in mouths again as Ahly pulled a goal back courtesy of a set piece with 10 minutes remaining. After agonising comeback draws against Gosnells and Shamrock Rovers in recent weeks, the Wolves wouldn’t be denied on this occasion and held out for an important 3 points. The win sees the side keep pace with fourth placed South Perth, who had a win down at Gosnells. The Caversham reserves had a comfortable 6-1 win over Ahly in the early game. A brace from David Wainwright, and further goals to Jordan Walker and Amir Fetibegovic had given the Wolves a 4-0 half time lead. Ahly pulled a goal back shortly after the break, however further goals from Fiasci and Gilson sealed the big win. The ressies’ record now sits at 9-8, so a few more wins to stay in the black would be great way for them to finish the season, given the constant squad changes throughout the season. The Socials put in a great shift, but ultimately went down 3-1 to Quinns FC at The Den. Lombardo with the goal for the Wolves, with coach Ben Garland reporting an excellent effort from the whole team. The next win surely can’t be too far away. With only a few short weeks until the season finishes, everyone needs to keep putting the effort in at training as we look to finish the season on a high. Tuesdays and Thursday at The Den, 7pm start for everyone.
