REWRITE YOUR SCRIPT IN 2015 No one is perfect, no one does everything right and never make mistakes or get things wrong. We all have our shortcomings, weaknesses and limitations. Also by the reason of our environment and experience, some of us have developed some negative habits and behaviours – detrimental to how we are seen, perceived and relative with by other people. Unfortunately, these negative traits have brought us into disrepute, disrespect, distrust and disfavour with many people who can help, promote, assist and reward us. Naturally people dont just trust everybody and decide to help everybody. Your favour or help is earned through someone believing you deserve it, youve earned it or you have the capacity to pay back. In life, nothing really goes for nothing. Everything comes with a reason and a price tag. Most things are earned directly or by proxy. Frankly speaking, I wont hire you if theres nothing you have that I find relevant. You must have something I need for my business for me to think youre worth hiring and rewarding. ouch Out of desperation, pressure, mischief or our weak human nature, we have unfortunately acted out of character in the past at work, making people see us in a very bad light hence; they cant trust us, they dont like us; they wont help us, promote or reward us. Omotunde after her service year was fortunate to get a good job in a top notch manufacturing firm precisely three months after. She was inducted and posted to work with the supply-chain team as a management trainee, her salary was good and her career was looking up. A vibrant, profitable world class firm with opportunities for local and international exposure and a promise of an exciting career journey. Hmmmm Motunde; a couple of months after resumption at this great place of work unfortunately, was jilted by her fiancée of six years. He didnt have any reason, he said he just felt she wasnt the one for him and he doesnt want to keep delaying and wasting her time. At about the same season, her widowed mother also went down with stroke and couldnt move around very much, hence she needed a lot of care and attention, Motunde was the only child at home with her mom, her 2 other younger siblings were schooling at a university outside the state. This was a very bad time for Motunde, she was in a very bad emotional state, she was angry, depressed, lonely, in hurt and carried great pain. She was heartbroken. This of course affected her concentration and performance at work, she was absent minded, slow and sluggish, very forgetful and her jobs were always marred with errors. Many times she would be starring at her immediate supervisor taking down a brief but her mind has travelled. She couldnt concentrate, she couldnt work well, she couldnt work hard, no creativity, no initiative no passion, no commitment, no interest, she was so off. Her boss unfortunately was taking in a first impression about Motunde, Motunde was new and there was no history about her ever being different from what she was currently portraying. Motunde on the other hand didnt want to be full of excuses and stories of her personal challenges and problems, she preferred to keep everything to herself, she felt it was too early for her to start telling stories. This continued for a long while and by the time her employment was due for confirmation, she didnt get it, she was however offered an extension of 3 months to prove herself if not she would be asked to go. Motunde on a good day was a fantastic hard working young lady, she was brilliant and got good grades in school, she actually got the highest score at the interviews that led to her employment. She wasnt a bad choice; circumstances and situations unfortunately marred her opportunity to create a good first impression. Motunde; though gradually and eventually recovered but by the end of that business year, her supervisor had complained about her to everyone and asked that she be moved to a less complicated or complex team where she can gradually grow and catch up. This information of course had gone round the whole business and everyone carried the opinion that Motunde was weak. No superior officer wanted her in their team; every one of them didnt want a so called ‘weak link’ in their team. It took the intervention of the head of human resources to persuade a particular team head to give Motunde a chance with a concession to watch her performance for a while and see if she improves if not, shell be asked to go. Her new team mates and supervisor already carrieda negative opinion hence, when she joined the team; a bias was already in place. Her views and opinions were taken with a pinch of salt and if it sounded really clever and practicable everyone appeared surprised. Everyone looked at her funny and treated her like she was dumb. She wanted to prove herself but no one really gave her the chance or opportunity. No important task or responsibility was handed her, and all she was allowed to do was assist other team mates with tasks and responsibilities. Motunde became tired of fighting and trying to convince everyone she wasnt all that bad, but the initial impression was difficult to correct. She wasnt confirmed when others were and they had to repost her to a so called less complex team – thats no good for her reputation. Motunde eventually gave up, became despondent and stopped trying. Her initial fire and passion were gone, she lost her career dream within that set up; no more vision or ambition, she just resolved to work for her salary and that was it. The business; her organisation, her first boss didnt understand and couldnt see the circumstances surrounding her initial poor performance at work. She also did not disclose to anyone especially her immediate boss, hence it wasnt entirely their fault. Motundes worst error was in giving up, she should have gone on ahead to rewrite that script, correct the impression and make right the wrong start no matter what it took. She ought to have worked on her self esteem and confidence and allowed the doubt many carried about her be a motivation to prove everyone wrong. She should have worked extra hard, put in extra time, extra effort and superior intelligence. If she was willing to correct that wrong impression with her new, immediate supervisor first; achieving it across the whole business would have become easier because her new boss would showcase the new improved Motunde for all to see. Motunde blew it, she lost the job. Many of us today may have grown, learnt new things, become more productive and efficient at work. But our initial poor performance and lazy attitude to work is still the popular opinion of our bosses, team mates and employers. Dear friend, resolve today to reject and correct this perception. Make deliberate attempts to prove youre now different. You may need double the effort put in by your colleagues to enjoy the good reputation they enjoy. Its simply because youre at the disadvantage for now. Begin to work on yourself to become outstanding, show interest, be passionate, be devoted, spend extra hours and put in extra effort. You can correct the impression; your career can become exciting, vibrant and interesting again. You can rewrite the script, you can correct the impression, you can enjoy your job, and enjoy the good company of your superiors and colleagues. Yes you can do it, dont give up, just keep on keeping on. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
