RNA interference (RNAi) has long been known as a known gene regulator, and as an antiviral in plants and insects. However, there has been much controversy if RNAi worked the same way in mammals. Two papers that were published this week put the debate to rest, showing that RNAi does indeed fight viruses in mammals. This remained a mystery in mammals for so long in part because mammals have other antiviral processes like interferons, many viruses are able to evade RNAi, and researchers may have previously been looking in the wrong place.
