RNZWCS Limited was incorporated on 11 December 2003 although first established in 1985. The Board are to meet in Wellington on 11 December 2013 and will recognise some of the achievements of the past decade. Below is the text taken from the Newsletter distibuted prior to incorporation. ROTARY NEW ZEALAND WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE = NEWS UPDATE = May 2003 Introducing the Rotary NZ World Community Service Committee Committee members Stuart Batty,9970, Mike Jaduram [Chair], Mike Smith, 9930 Bruce Rasmussen, 9910, Alan Davies, 9920 and Morris Robertson, 9940. Absent Rob Wilton, 9980. This committee was established to recognise the need, at times, to take a New Zealand wide view of World Community Service and each of the 6 New Zealand Districts are represented on this committee. Of particular importance is the NZAID [formerly part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade] requirement to have a single New Zealand interface when accessing VASS funds. RNZWCS is recognised by the New Zealand Government as an NGO and has an Administrator and a qualified subcommittee to deal with VASS funding and related matters. All clubs seeking VASS funds must work through the Administrator after clearing applications with the District Grants Committee. In addition the Committee provides opportunities for Rotary clubs throughout New Zealand to be actively engaged in projects mainly in the South West Pacific and elsewhere in the world. The Donations in Kind sub committee of RNZWCS advises on needs, provides storage and co-ordinates distribution of goods particularly to the Pacific Islands. Voluntary Agencies Support Scheme [VASS] VASS was established by the New Zealand Government in 1974 to support non government organisations with World Community Service Projects. VASS recognises the expertise that Rotary has in working effectively at the grassroots level amongst the world’s poorest people. The partnership between Rotary and VASS complements the partnership that exists between Rotary clubs and The Rotary Foundation. Projects that qualify for a Rotary Foundation grant will invariably qualify for a VASS grant as long as the project is developmental and not welfare. For every dollar that a club contributes to a project, VASS will contribute $2, and for projects specifically aimed at empowering gender equality in development, for every dollar VASS will contribute $4. In all cases VASS will contribute up to $100,000 per project. Clubs wishing to access VASS grants must do so through Rotary New Zealand World Community Service. The Rotary Representative on VASS Committee is PDG Stuart Batty, PO Box 20 309, Bishopdale, Christchurch Res 03 359 9218, fax 03 359 9218 Email : [email protected] Large Government Grant to Polio As a result of representations from RNZWCS, led by PDG Stuart Batty and DG Judy Bain, the Government has announced a contribution of $600,000 to the Rotary Polio Eradication programme. This is to be added to the sums raised by the six NZ Districts. In addition the Government has contributed further substantial sums to our project partners UNICEF and World Health Organisation. Emergency Boxes – Aqua Boxes Emergency boxes, wooden style, were originally initiated in District 9940. They are filled and stored ready for first response in Pacific emergencies. They have been invaluable in getting lives restarted. Districts 9910 and 9920 advanced the concept with the introduction of plastic boxes, which are better for stacking and can subsequently be used for water storage. The 9910 box now comes with the additional feature of a tap which allows dirty water to be filtered into drinking water. The cost is $60 per box.
