ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. - The Big Meadows Fire in Rocky Mountain National Park is increasing in size due to a spot fire, according to park spokesman Kyle Patterson. Patterson explains that the fire is growing due to a "spot fire" fueled by high winds, low humidity and beetle-killed trees. The fire was started by lightning on Monday in the Big Meadows, 4.5 miles from the Green Mountain Trailhead, officials said. At the last estimate, the fire has burned two to three acres. Patterson said a new fire size estimate would be updated released later today. Earlier Tuesday, officials at Rocky Mountain National Park said they planned to fight the fire on the west side of the park instead of letting it burn. There are five trails temporarily closed in the area -- the Onahu Trail, the Green Mountain Trail, the lower Tonahutu Trail, the Tonahutu Spur Trail and the Grand Lake Lodge Spur Trail.
