ROOMS DESIGNED BY GALWAYS INTERIOR DESIGNER CARRIE MORAN Galway-based interior designer Carrie Moran has created two special rooms for young people in honour of inspiring teenager Donal Walsh at the Console suicide prevention and bereavement centre in Limerick. Donal’s Rooms have been funded by the Donal Walsh LiveLife fund and are dedicated to furthering the Kerry teen’s message to young people not to take their own lives which inspired the nation before his death from cancer last year. The plan is that Console’s Galway centre will open Donal’s Rooms in the near future. “In Limerick we have created two rooms specially designed so that children and teenagers in distress can feel safe and where they can get immediate professional help, counselling and support,” said Console CEO Paul Kelly. Donal’s Rooms will open in Console’s Tralee centre later this summer and the aim is to provide more of them around the country, including Galway, in conjunction with the national suicide prevention and bereavement charity. “For the Limerick rooms I tried to create spaces that encourage teenagers to communicate and where young children can feel safe and comfortable,” said interior designer Carrie who is a native of Moycullen. Console’s project manager Margaret Tierney, who is based at the Galway Console Centre at Elm Park in Renmore, is delighted with Carrie’s work. “In the teenagers’ room there is an iPad station with a wide selection of music which is great for encouraging young people who find it difficult to express their emotions to relax and interact with their counsellors,” said Margaret. “The children’s room contain some wonderful features such as sandboxes and toys to encourage play,” she added. The manager of Console’s Limerick centre Emer O’Neill is also enthused by Carrie’s creations. “They are only just opened but already Donal’s Rooms are proving a great success in helping troubled teenagers and children to open up to counsellors,” said Emer. Donal’s mother Elma Walsh said the LiveLife fund raises money specifically for facilities for teenagers and she hopes to see more Donal’s Rooms open in Console’s Galway centre soon.
