ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Its been almost one year since Roland and Gloria Johnson left their comfortable Roseburg home to serve in the Democratic Republic of Congo for 18 months as humanitarian missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Over the past year, they have helped coordinate a variety of church-sponsored projects, from digging wells and teaching food production techniques to supporting government vaccination efforts. In a recent blog post, Gloria wrote, “Roland and I arrived here in the Congo not knowing anything about wells and pumps and clean water. It’s amazing what you can learn and do when you are serving the Lord.” Her blog is found at roandglocongo.blogspot. Before they began their missionary service, Roland had a local law practice, while Gloria was writing a monthly travel column for the News-Review. In her final column before leaving, Gloria wrote, “I have been asked why we would do such a thing. The answer is simple --we want to serve others as the Lord has reminded us… now it is time to tackle something big, as I want to do all I can to help these people [in the Congo] for the next 18 months.” The Johnsons plan to return home to Roseburg in July.
