ROUND 8 – A1 GRADE MATCH REVIEWS DISCOUNT - FEVER FLATTENS FRANKSTON Mornington’s “Discount” Price and “Fever” O’Meara have pulled off a miracle win over “Miracle” Peacock and Sam Palmer “The Frankston Express” to drag their side into contention for a top two finish, and a chance to play off for a gold coloured medal in three weeks time. The doubles is always critical when you play any side featuring the silky skills of “The Frankston Express” and a 3-1 win in the doubles rubber to the Mornington duo, set their side up with a chance of toppling the Frankston young guns. And topple them they did, when Fever and Discount managed to defeather Peacock which was enough to secure victory for Mornington, regardless of the hammering handed out to both players by Palmer. The upset win results in Mornington joining Frankston in second spot on the ladder, although an inferior percentage may prove costly to Mornington’s quest for gold. Top of the ladder Mt Martha enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win over the struggling Somerville combination of Jim “Sparky” Furness and Nick “The man with no nickname” Underwood. For the umpteenth time this season, it was left to the veteran Furness to fly the flag for his beloved Somerville, with his hard fought 4-2 win over “The Chilean Marvel” Juan Carlos Seguel, the only thing to get Somerville fans excited. “The Marvel” and Jarryd Cathcart “The J C Train” had earlier set up victory with a 3-0 demolition of the Somerville pair and of course bookmakers have long stopped taking bets on any match involving “The J C Train” Crushing 4-0 wins over both Furness and Underwood will result in Cathcart’s name being engraved on yet another Leading Player trophy, enjoying as he does a three game lead over his nearest opponent with two rounds to play. Smarting from a pair of losses last round, “Jumping Jay” Debernardi came out fighting and looking for a reversal of form and was indeed fortunate to find himself squaring off with the poorly performing Carrum Downs combination. On paper, Peter “Trainmaker” Cathcart and Jim Ratnan “The Black Panther” look the goods but to say they haven’t clicked as a team is an understatement. The Carrum Downs duo took a pounding from game 1 in the doubles against “Jumping Jay” and “Lobby” Lloyd and in retrospect, may have been better off negotiating terms of surrender at that point, rather than seeking to delay the inevitable. But to their credit, this team of table tennis masochists played on and was rewarded with a surprise 4-0 victory recorded by the “The Black Panther” over “Lobby”. The rest however was history with Dromana running out 4-1 winners assuring themselves of a bronze medal playoff game and more importantly, some free food. Hit hard and prosper Greig Whitelaw
