RSOE EDIS Event Report - Toxic algae has been detected in two Canterbury rivers with health authorities warning people and pets to stay away. Mats of a potentially toxic Phormidium species, benthic cyanobacteria, have been found in the Selwyn/Waikirikiri River at the Whitecliffs Domain and the Ashley/Rakahuri River near State Highway 1. Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the algae was coloured dark brown to black and could release harmful toxins.
