RULE OF THE WEEK : PROVISIONAL BALL 27-2 a Margaret could not - TopicsExpress

RULE OF THE WEEK : PROVISIONAL BALL 27-2 a Margaret could not find her ball after her second shot and so she said to her playing companion Kerry that she was going to hit a provisional ball. She went back to where she hit the original and dropped another ball. Before she hit the provisional ball and within five minutes Kerry called out that she had found Margaret’s original ball. Which of the following statements is CORRECT? A : Margaret cannot play a provisional ball once she has moved forward to play the next ball and therefore she must play the found original, without penalty B : Since Margaret is not entitled to play a provisional ball she is penalised two strokes for breach of the provisional ball rule C : Once Margaret dropped a ball at the spot where she played her previous stroke, it became her ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance and she must continue play with the dropped ball ANSWER C is the correct answer : Rule 27-2a Provisional Ball - a provisional ball must be played before going forward to search for the original ball. Since Margaret could not find her original ball and dropped a ball at the spot where she played her previous stroke, she is putting a substituted ball into play under penalty of stroke and distance (not a provisional ball) (Rule 27-1a). The substituted ball became the ball in play when it was dropped (Rule 20-4) and the original ball is now a lost ball (definition of “lost ball”).
