Racing selections 072013 Saturday Mid July 2013 the height of the northern Hemisphere racing season brings forth a number of outstanding feature presentations and a petit look at some may prove entertaining even profitable should a meteor streak across the skies before sundown. One of the better threads to follow is the return of Royal Delta -freshened from her gloomy appearance in the zillion dollar world cup- there are many other fine thoroughbred eager to win this Saturday- a look at some follows: Over at Del Mar where I have already blown my bankroll after a mere two days of competition offers the Eddie Read a G1 stakes and amongst the stars starting will be a Deep Impact horse namely Barocci, he may be of interest as a grandson of Sunday Silence, perhaps the greatest stallion to ever set foot in the land of the rising sun and naturally people who want to breed horses might be attracted to Barocci, as a stud prospect- a win here would sort of set him up for life- more down to earth, is good old Jeranimo, a son of great Congaree, who has struggled as a stallion- The group 3 Hackwood at Newbury Park England is a turf sprint for 3yo and Shamaal Nibras, has a pedigree familiar to most bloodlines students here in the US= First Samurai x Sashay Away x Farma Way -the latter a 17 hands behemoth son of ultra quick Foolish Pleasure, a steed so geared up that his blazing speed initiated Ruffian’s self destruct button in their ill-fated match race at Belmont Park many moons ago- anyway, the ff is that of Blue Grass stakes winner Halory Hunter, if that helps- The Irish Oaks is rekindled at the Cuuragh and a look to Alive Alive Oh, first in the pp’s in this very blue blooded field reveals she is kin to High Hawk 2nd in the Irish Oaks of 1983- perhaps the bay filly, who was a 150K yearling prize can improve on her “cousin’s” act? The aforementioned Royal Delta, returned on June 15th at Churchill Downs and remarkably was beaten!!?? At 30 cents to the dollar -no doubt causing many prescriptions to be written to help assuage the pain she wrought to happy then saddened punters- before her trip to the burning sands -she was mentioned in the same breath as Regret, Genuine Risk and Winning Colors, but now the blue blooded daughter of Empire Maker x Delta Princess has lost 2 in a row- Darley Stable sends in their AP Indy daughter Centring, on the notion that a win in this race will make her babies as valuable as a Renoir- her dam Composure, won the Santa Anita Oaks and the Oak Leaf stakes- Perhaps the CCA Oaks is our version of the great Oaks races of Europe and Ruffian graces its honor roll of winners as does Chris Evert and Mom’s Command- aiming to join the select scroll is Unlimited Budget, who faced males in the Belmont Stakes and acquitted herself well running 6th versus Palace Malice and Orb and Oxbow etc. There is little to chose from in the short field and Agent Pletcher has his Princess of Sylmar ready as well -she won the prestigious Kentucky Oaks at 40-1 but I don’t think she is as good as her stable mate -I suppose the best chance to upset these two Pletcherite might be Cue The Moon, from the stable of manager 007 James Bond- but a look at her female underpinnings (family wise) seem to indicate her chances as extremely remote- as for Unlimited Budget, she traces back to foal of 1802 Maid of the Oaks, who was inbred to Marske, sire of Eclipse, 4x3 - Marske, was so despised by his royal owner that a blunderbuss was pointed at his head- The Duke in the midst of hurling epithets at the animal was deterred from his deadly mission by Marske pleading stable lad who begged his master for mercy upon the hideously ugly son of Squirt “please master, I will tend to this steed as if he were mine child” this bit of delay allowed the drunken Duke’s anger to settle somewhat -and with a barrage of curses he left the barn and Marske, survived to later sire the stallion responsible for 90% of the runners engaged in the sport worldwide today!!
