Racing selections 081313 Tuesday The racing at US tracks like Parx and Suffolk Downs represent the nitty gritty of our nations racing activities- since the majority of horses bred and those who tend to them will naturally gravitate to less than the penthouses along Thoroughbred Boulevard- frustration and disappointment, heartbreak and huge financial loss is also at the heart of this most unforgiving sport, in which anything that can go wrong will- or better, as the poet exclaimed “Past bows and invitations, Past interview, and vow, Past what ourselves can estimate,- That makes the quick of woe!” Parx has benefited from the gaming & slots manifestation of racetrack reality in Pennsylvania -and day to day, a pretty good racing program is put together, with excellent purses up for grabs - I think yesterday a maiden race had a 40K carrot at the end of it- Suffolk Downs out in Boston, a little north west of Logan Airport, has been in a death struggle for years- but on the horizon is Casino money- Suffolk Downs people are trying hard to land the Casino slotted for the Boston metro area- Bostonians love to wager and gamble, as anyone who has been shopping at a lotto joint there can attest- people of all sizes and shapes leaning against any support, scratching their tickets as fervently as a martyr ascending to his cloud- the purse for race 1 at Parx is 23K and that for the opener at Suffolk 9K -a fine example as to how “casino” money can help the locals racing funding and programs- opponents of placing a casino at Suffolk Downs include those citing crime and traffic and family disruptions due to “Mom or dad” taking the paycheck directly to the casino rather than to the bank. SUFFOLK Race 1- DAKOTA SUN seems a viable option in the rock bottom event- the sire Sun King was a member of the Summer Squall male line- and he won the Pennsylvania Derby in 2005- Race 2- rumor has it that Forest Wildcat is and has been a superior sire of fillies- the notion gets the acid test in the form of URLOVEISASYMPHONY who nose dives in valuation from 12.K to 5K claiming- or “the big dropdown”- Race 3- long shot time and I can’t pass a chance to toss a few coins at BUBBER poised at 9yo to run a turf heat- the broodmare chain are Euro types dating back to Anchora (1905) she was granddame to great studs Pharos and brother Fairway- Race 4- I would assume the most money tossed into the dumpster at betting forums would be those wagering on horses to repeat their last efforts- especially winning ones- in this heat SUNSHINE LADY romped by 10 lengths last trip- and she was claimed from the race, a maiden 5K jamboree- has she gotten the message-?? Her family seems speed minded, so the six furlongs might be within her skills- Race 5- is an interesting sprint with a filly taking on males- but I’ll properly live to regret fancying FRANK BE COOL- a son of All My Promises- she is from the family of champion tyro Lord Avie- Race 6- maiden claiming types trying to get a mile without resorting to cab fare- ETHAN JOHN might be a green mountain boy- his sire Spanish Steps was an unraced son of highly important Unbridled- Race 7- REAL GONE appeals to my senses, she seems to have a mild class edge over these- her sire Repent is a son of Preakness star Louis Quatorze- Repent himself won the Louisiana Derby and placed in the Travers Stakes- I wasn’t a fan when he was a racer but I’ve grown to love his antics as a stallion- Race 8- turf milers- KILLTHEMESSENGER seems to be well placed in this mile- although its his turf debut- he may or may not take to the surface- if he doesn’t, then its killthehorseplayer- Race 9- I’ve been hoping to catch ORIENTAL QUEEN for nearly a year- she muddled through her last heat a couple of weeks ago at the distance at Suffolk- maybe she can improve on the rail- the female family is the top notch crew of Torsion, the very fast sprinter who beat Mr. Prospector fair and square and also raced against mightiest Secretariat- PARX Race 1- is a tough one but BOLT ACTION comes off the turf and seems to have the most “form” in the pp’s - its sire First Defence, was a speedy sort and very handsome- he won a G1 7 furlongs fixture on his best day- Race 2- on the outside of this field is SUNSHINE SANDRA who last raced over a “good” track- maybe she like to hear her feet rattle and the sun may be out tomorrow in Philadelphia- her bottom line is very shaky- Race 3- bred to be a champion was golden rock -who Will HAVE TO HAVE AN EPIPHANY TO BEAT THE Lawyer Ron lass WHAT A DELIGHT- of course both of them may easily be neaten- so what is good about GOLDEN ROCK? Not much -with her breeding, she fetched a mere 60K at a high fashion sale when a baby- Citation may have sired her 5th dam, if that will console one ripping up tickets- Race 4- esteemed trainer Scott Lake offers an entry in this heat- NARBONA PASS & STING BOY- the former may come down the pike from a sister to very quick Full Pocket -while the latter is inbred to mightiest Secretariat 5x4 via Six Crowns and Forever Sparkle, who in turn was a good son of tremendous broodmare Irradiate- Forever Sparkle, was an estimable stallion beneath the Southern Cross- Race 5- SEWANEE is another by ultra-fashionable Preakness winner Bernardini- and I must say an awful lot of Bernardini offspring find themselves looking for wins in Philadelphia- Ms. Farro claimed this one recently - he has already been gelded- the very fine Northwestern US stud Basket Weave was a member of this family- which may be the reason Bernardini was introduced to Seoul- Race 6- is another in a series of excellent 2yo races offered at Parx in recent weeks- PROPER FREUD is appraised in the ML at 12/1 which seems kind of nice- its workouts will remind nobody of Flying Paster- but they are acceptable- and under the hood it harkens back to black type LADY CLEVER TRICK from Man O War’s daughter Armada’s family- Race 7- PROVIDENTIAL BID appears a hands down choice- but the only sure things in life are death and taxes and a honest effort from Zenyatta- the last 2 times this “bid” was favored, he could not deliver the payout for win anyway- the 4th dam Lava Creek was sired by the wild horse Jacinto, a critter whose progeny always appeared as if they had just been in a alley fight with brass knuckles and baseball bats- his offspring usually appeared as chestnuts as coarse as sandpaper with tremendous musculature in their aft quarters- bred by Claiborne Farm, Jacinto may have stood there for a spell William H. Perry owned him when he placed in the Santa Anita Derby to eventual Kentucky Derby hero Lucky Debonair in 1965- Race 8- a stallion who died much to young (as if there is ever a proper time to go to the next world)- was Lawyer Ron- again I wasn’t a big fan when he was a race horse, but his progeny, what few he got- have almost all been gutsy and determined and that I surmise is the best one can wish for in a game of appalling failure rates- in this heat I’ll back JURYS OUT a winner of a state bred maiden affair last try- its dam Goldie Pops, was inbred 3x3 to decisive Raise A Native author of the most beautiful glowing horses I ever saw- as a yearling she fetched 22K and she was an American family “4” broodmare- Swaps being the greatest of those- Race 9- FROZEN FOUR seems to be iced in maiden claiming status and tries to remove a furlong in order to get to be a winner- a major underachiever, he is a grandson of one of the fastest fillies of the last half century Safely Kept- she was the champion sprinter of 1989 and won twice a million- a most interesting pedigree study Safely Kept, certainly is a testimony for the notion of family over the individual- Harry S.
