Rail trail advocates are inferring that the outcome of this motion by Byron Shire Council to support the proposed Northern Rivers Rail Trail is a victory, generally, for the rail trail movement in New South Wales. Such a victory, this council vote is NOT! What those rail trail advocates appear to neglect to state is that this particular motion was only marginally carried by a vote of 5 to 4 against. If anything, this particular council vote typifies the deep division being created within the community by rail trail proposals, particularly those proposals which would entail dismantling the railway line. Rail transport advocates at TOOT Trains on our Tracks actually tabled at this council meeting, a petition with some 2,000 signatures supporting the reinstatment of train services on this line.
