Rally marks Vanmahotsava celebrations Port Blair, July 5 As part of the month long Vanamahotsava, an awareness rally was organized by the Forest Extension and Publicity Division, Department of Environment and Forests today. About 150 school students and teachers from GSSS, Hindi and Telugu Medium, GSS, Tamil and English Medium, Haddo as well as officers and staff of the Forest Department participated in the rally which passed through many places in Port Blair city to create awareness among the students and general public of these islands about the importance of the Vanamahotsava. Flagging off the rally, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, ANI & Principal Secretary (Forests), Dr. Shashi Kumar gave a detailed account of the threats to the entire world due to global warming, climate change and mentioned rising of sea level due to melting of glaciers. He emphasized that planting, protecting and conserving trees and forests are the best option to fight global warming. Forests are renewable resources and plants are the only community for keeping the Carbon locked in the form of wood, he added. The DFO, FE&PD, Shri B.P.Yadav spoke about various activities/events being organised by the Department during the 65th Van Mahotsava. The rally concluded at Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Aberdeen where the Principal of the school, Dr.B.M.Bhatt, teachers and students received the rally. A mass tree plantation was also conducted in the school premises.
