[Ramadan FAQs] Is it Permissible to start fasting from the 16th of Shabaan (This month)? Initiating fasting from the 16th of Shabaan is a controversial issue and what seems to be the more correct stance is that it is not permissible except for the ones with a valid reason. This is in light of the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: “When Shabaan is half over, do not fast.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and others. It is Sahih [authentic] according to Sheikh Al-Albani) This hadith indicates that it is not allowed to fast after halfway through Shabaan except for those who are continuing after fasting before halfway through the month or have a habitual pattern of fasting such as a person who regularly fasts on Mondays and Thursdays, or who fasts alternate days or who fasts the three middle days of each lunar month (13, 14 and 15) or for those making up their days from a previous Ramadan. The reason put forward by most scholars for this prohibition is that continually fasting may make a person too weak to fast in Ramadan. If it is said that if a person fasts from the beginning of the month he will become even weaker, the response is that whoever fasts from the beginning of Shabaan will have gotten used to fasting, so it will be less difficult to fast.
