Random confession time: Im an aspiring novelist. Im plotting a mystery novel right now, and once Im done with that, Im going to write a horror novel. Here are the first 436 words of the horror novel in case any of you are interested. What do you think? -Haru- Joel knew he shouldn’t be walking through the forest at night. He should have been handing out candy to trick-or-treaters who were debatably too old. If not that, he should have been at the Halloween party with his friends. And yet here he was, trudging along the path in the woods behind his house, alone, on Halloween night. Anything to get away from the people who bored him day in and day out. He stopped when he thought he saw something nailed to a tree stump to his right. Squinting, he stepped toward it, trying to figure out what it was. Judging by the shape and the panging sound it make when he rapped his knuckles on it, it was likely one of those WARNING: wild animals crossing signs. However, he squinted his eyes even more, and as a result realized that there were no letters on the sign. Instead, it was just a black silhouette drawing of the grim reaper. Joel frowned at the unusual nature of the sign, but shrugged and continued on his way. He did not get very far, however, before he saw another sign, this one dangling from an overhanging tree branch. Once again, he had to squint to see what it said, but could make out the command: Follow the reaper. He sensed the presence of somebody else and turned around quickly. There, standing to what was his left, but was now right in front of Joel, was a man clad in a dark blue cloak. The hood was pulled over his head, so that Joel could only see the bottom half of a calm face that looked like it belonged to a man in his early fifties. Joel noticed that with one hand, the man was pointing in the direction he had been taking, and in the other, he held a scythe that looked suspiciously real. “Um…Yeah, I was going that way. Why?” The man did not answer, instead continuing down the path Joel was taking. However, after a few steps, he stopped, turned to Joel, and inclined his head to the sign. Joel looked up and once again read the words: Follow the reaper. Joel hesitated. The man was not speaking, but seemed to want him to follow. The scythe and reaper robes certainly did not help his cause. However, it was Halloween, so Joel could not rule out the possibility that it was just another creepy prank. Besides, Joel thought, following the reaper can’t possibly be any worse than having the reaper follow you. Thus, Joel continued on his path, trailing the man dressed as the reaper.
