Rant Time, youve been warned: Ive been reading some things lately that had me thinking about the state our society is in. Namely, the need by many to vilify greed. Many people would condemn the greed of an individual. This left me wondering why greed should be considered a bad thing. It seems like many people today choose to label capitalism as the religion of greed. If it a religion of anything, it would be the religion of freedom. Capitalism doesnt seek to stomp out the weak, or hold the 99% down. A capitalism, and the free market economics it employs only seeks to raise those in poverty up through something that is also being demonized, work. When speaking with many college students, they seem to advocate for a system similar to that of Norway. This is simply a nice way of saying socialism. Which it would seem they do not fully understand. Socialism is not a liberating force that seeks the betterment of all. It is a system that subjugates the free into an unsustainable system. It does not empower an individual. It tells the individual that they cannot have more than someone else, because someone in a lower economic standing would feel bad. It seems that now the desire to want more money to better your economic standing, and by extension the living conditions of your family, is greedy. What I obtain through my own perseverance and work is mine, and mine alone. It is not greedy of me to believe this. It is greedy for the state to take it, and funnel it into an unsustainable wealth redistribution mechanism. People will also tell you that Capitalism is creating a wealth gap. A wealth gap does not equal a deeper level of poverty. Socialism would rather make the poor poorer, as long as the rich were less rich. So why is greed bad? Why must someone give up what they have earned only to appease those that have earned nothing? This doesnt mean there shouldnt be safety nets in place to help those that need it. It means that those safety nets are just that, safety nets. They shouldnt be used as the sole means of living. No other economic system on Earth can say that it has empowered individuals to carve out their own freedom and well being other than Capitalism. Socialism doesnt even look nice on paper. It is an immoral means for a government to seize power, and keep it. People should always be free to make their own economic decisions without the state interfering.
