Rapes are finally being reported in Muzaffarnagar. The Indian Express has brought out 4 rapes, all from Fugana village which the police has transferred to the special investigation team of the Uttar Pradesh Police. These belated complaints were obviously delayed by the dislocation in normal life and a fear of retaliation by the Jats. Kalpana Saxena, SP (Crime), Muzaffarnagar, has stated that the police have only examined 200 riot-related complaints so far, but there were hundreds left. Considering how reluctant women are to register rape complaints, there are probably many more rape cases which did not come to light when the factfinding teams came earlier. Unfortunately, the SP and BSP cadres are not as active as expected, whereas the BJP is systematically expanding its base. It is high time that secular political parties and civil society renew their investigations in Muzaffarnagar focusing on crimes against women, and the ghettoisation of Muslims.
