Rarely encountered sub-Antarctic Type-D orcas: more details on the extended encounter with 13 rarely observed toothfish predators by Sea Shepherd last month and caught on video. DNA retrieved from the initial (1955) stranding of this ecotype revealed that Ecotype Ds genetic differences point at a divergence from other Orcas about 390,000 years ago; this makes Ecotype D the second oldest orca type, and the second most genetically divergent.
