Raven Alexanda Yesterday i met Pete and John in Edinburgh. Pete has been homeless since April and living rough on the streets after being sanctioned for the third time in a row. He told me his bus was late and so got to his meeting late by two minutes. He was told he should be better prepared for such occurrences and should have got an earlier bus. John has been homeless for two months, poor health has made him unable to work but not ill enough according to DWP. No sickness benefit, no housing and so his landlord kicked him out. We enjoyed our Christmas sandwiches and some mince pies whilst they told me about life on the streets, the difficulties they have to overcome, how they are shunned and ridiculed by passers by. They both try to help others in their situation by dumpster diving or skipping but even that is getting harder, if not impossible, due to stores deliberately spoiling their still edible throw aways to deter the homeless. Both expressed how hard it is to remain positive when no matter which way they turn, obstacles are put in their way by those in authority, the establishment. Even jumping through hoops is futile John said, they wouldnt even spare a glass of water when he had a coughing fit in his last meeting. What is this nation becoming if this is how the powers that be treat the poorest of our brethren?
