In what appears to be his first public comment on the dire state of the countrys economy, the ex-president stated emphatically that times are really hard. An incurable critic of the John Kufuor and the John Mills administrations, the ex-president John Rawlings has loudly been silent on the performance of the John Mahama administration. With the high cost of living triggered by rising food prices, rising fuel prices, rising utility prices and a fall in the countrys currency, many have been waiting to hear what the ex-president thinks about president John Mahamas management of the economy. At a brief ceremony to donate some items to two of Ghanas celebrated boxers- Bukom Banku and Ayittey Powers- at his residence, the ex-president did not fail to tell a story about how the strangling economic situation is affecting him, an ex-president. In an impeccable Ga language delivered with a touch of humour, the president lamented how the price of a pack of milk had more than doubled. He said the pack which used to sell at 35.00 cedis is now selling at 60.00 cedis. As ex-president who sometimes buy provisions to support his guards, Mr Rawlings said he is bearing the brunt of beleaguered economy. He said school fees had gone up, adding he virtually had to pay millions [old cedis] for something small he bought for a patient recovering from his sickness. We must all bear the responsibility, he charged, adding in every situation the people get the government they deserve.
