Re: Swimming Activities – November/December The St Vincent and the Grenadines Amateur Swimming Association (SVGASA) in partnership with the Bank of Nova Scotia and LIME are pleased to present an update on recently completed activities and upcoming activities. 1. OECS Swimming Championships St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be sending a team of 23 swimmers to compete in the OECS swimming championships to be held in St Lucia during the period November 8th to 10th, 2013. The Swimming Association would like to express its sincere gratitude to its corporate partners, Scotiabank, LIME and Coreas. In addition, it would not be possible for SVG to be represented at the OECS Swimming Championships without the assistance of the National Lottery and we would like to express our appreciation to the Lottery and to the Prime Minister for their support. The team to represent SVG will comprise of seven girls and sixteen boys. The girls are Tia Gun-Munro, Paige Cadogan, Isabella Bollers, Jamie Joachim, Ria Adams, Shné Joachim and Adora Lawrence. The boys are Tristan Ballah, Kenale Alleyne, Brycen George, James Joseph, Alexander Joachim, Nikolas Sylvester, Chavez Joseph, Shane Cadogan, Dillon Gooding, Storm Halbich, Dorien Antrobus, Tyrell Raguette, Khori Browne, Trevin Williams, Prince Richardson and Arthur Laborde. The OECS Championships are very competitive and teams from Grenada, St Lucia, Antigua, BVI as well as St Vincent and the Grenadines will be represented. St Lucia are the defending champions. The SVG Swimming Association conducted its official time trails event on the weekend of September 6th to 8th to select the team to represent St. Vincent and all swimmers had to meet competitive qualifying time standards for their age groups to be eligible for National Team selection. The Association is extremely pleased that three youngsters from Bequia met the qualifying standards. This is clear evidence that our outreach program is bearing fruit. 2. Technical Training for Coaches Program. The Swimming Association has secured funding through the National Olympic Committee and Olympic Solidarity to conduct a Technical Training for Coaches program to be held in St. Vincent. The program leader will be Rick Powers who is a very experienced international swim coach. Rick has coached in several countries and conducted numerous clinics on behalf of FINA (the worldwide body that represents aquatics). The program will be conducted from October 17th to October 31st. It is NOT restricted to swim coaches only; physical education teachers and other coaches are welcomed to attend. The Association has written to the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Education to extend an invitation to Physical Education teachers to participate in this program. The Program will focus on Physiology of Training and Leadership skills. It will also have a strong swim component and will be interest to those who would also like to teach swimming. 3. December Plans and the 2014 calendar. The Swimming Association intends to provide support for a team of our best six swimmers to attend both the Barbados National Short Course Championships in early December and the Trinidad ASATT Championships in mid-December. These are important events as we look to continue to establish a solid team for next year, 2014. We expect 2014 to be a very busy year for SVG in elite swimming with the CARIFTA championships in April in Aruba; the CISC Championships in Barbados in July; the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in August; the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in August; the CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico in November and the World Championships in Dubai in December. We would like to thank the National Olympic Committee, Olympic Solidarity and Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) for their invaluable assistance without which it would be almost impossible to develop our sport at the competitive level. Please contact us at svgasa@gmail with any queries, comments or suggestions you may have in regard to the above or any swimming matters.
