Re: The Miami Dolphins: Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin. Responding to the hot issue of bullying and race, WR Brandon Marshall (Pardon the Interruption 11/07/13) had the insight and courage to say publicly that the culture of the NFL locker room needs to change. Looking in from the outside at those who play team sport, the locker room culture is as close as one gets to One Size Fits All. Players’ reaction to pain (physical, emotional or mental) is to suck it up. Move on to the next play. Not only did Martin violate the code of honor by telling tales out of school, he also walked away. Enter Incognito. I strongly believe that his documented strategy of using racial abuse to” toughen up” Jonathan is the reason that the issue became public. The urgent need to preserve the team’s code means that Richie, not Jonathan, must be seen to be the victim. To some, uncritical use of the so-called “N word” is, in their dream world, a means of promoting racial harmony inside and outside the locker room. WR Wallace and Hall of Famer Sapp declare that N is Okay. In their rush toward a make- believe world of a post racial society, they forgot to seek an opinion from Bill Russell, or Jim Brown, or Julius Erving. These outstanding citizens played their chosen sport at the highest levels of excellence. Ask anyone of them and he would say: The N word means NO. PS: in The Oxford English Dictionary, Incognito means “…concealed under a disguised or assumed character.”
