Re: [Wisconsin Judo] Im curious if other players, coaches, and refs... I fully agree with Dr. Berliner and only teach as he does.  Look @ Koga. Kim Nguyen commented on their post in Wisconsin Judo. T. Kim Nguyen 9:52am Dec 29 As far as I know, there is no restriction on the use of that technique. If everyone practiced it the way you teach it I dont think it would be a problem. Comment History Jerry L. Cypert 9:52am Dec 29 Gary - No knee drop Seioi-nage is not illegal in WI. Gary Berliner 9:47am Dec 29 Is knee drop Seioi-nage for children under a certain age a Hansoku-make under local rules? Wisconsin rules? USJF rules? I know in France it is not permitted. But, it is NOT illegal under IJF rules. Just curious. I never teach it. I only teach Seioi-nage with Tori driving upward and forward off the balls of the feet, no matter how low they go. John T. Jacobson 6:55pm Dec 11 Who was the referee? Send me a private message and I will help clarify. This is hansoku maki. Make Sure i $ doing a proper fall. I know his instructors teach proper falls. Also speak with the referee missing the call, or the team on your concern. Be nice. Charmaine Alsager 3:50pm Dec 11 There is no need to even teach a drop seionage. Often, it is a result of a weak technique and loss of control. Furthermore, with the rule changes no longer allow grabbing the legs, again there is no need for the drop. Teach the technique ... one or two arm shoulder throw. Teach left and right side. Teach proper break falls, ukemi. But, most importantly, teach mutual respect. This includes the need to your best ... win or lose. This is a parents greatest test, ... to be able to allow their child to grow and learn through the failures as well as successes. Coaches need to emphasize proper technique and safety in all training. They need to educate all students and parents on mutual welfare and benefit. Attend the pretournament meeting!!!! Attend all referee and coach clinics and meetings as possible. The referees and tournament directors need to enforce the rules. Yes, there is room at the local level for education, and bending the rules for the competitors and the sport for the younger ones. Bend not break ... and for the sake of education. [Exp: 1st offense loss of match with warning. 2nd offense out of tournament.] However, the safety of the competitors comes first. Explanation, maybe demo, at opening by head referee explaining to all competitors, coaches, and spectators. The short of this is WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR TEACHING, COACHING, ENFORCING, AND SPREADING THE WORD. Thats mutual welfare and benefit in action. Leaves no room for passing the buck! Cindy J Peterson 2:51pm Dec 11 We do not teach it at our club until the kid has a decent standing seoinage AND is at least a green belt. We also do not let them throw anyone lower than a green belt with it in practice. I see a lot of poorly executed drops where Ukes head gets bounced off the mat. Our kids are very good at ukemi, but the younger, lower ranks are having difficulty avoiding having their heads driven into the mat. We have a player who just returned from competition in France. They are preparing for new IJF rulings. He is 14. He was nor allowed to choke, use Sankaku, drop seoinage and a lingering high collar grip. We will have to work with him to find alternate techniques as he uses all of the above. I do not want to start a flame war, but this information was passed to us this week. View All Comments Original Post T. Kim Nguyen 10:43am Dec 11 Im curious if other players, coaches, and refs are concerned with the noticeable increase in drop knee seio nage. With several players (including my son) having their head slammed into the mat this way, is there a need to penalize improper technique or even ban it from Wisconsin tournaments?
