Re post, Off campus, rents in Fort Collins increased dramatically, and the rate of new home construction doubled. Working together, the college and the chamber of commerce decided to build a “Veteran’s Village” on campus. A location was selected on campus south of Laurel and west of Loomis (now Corbett and Parmelee halls). Despite a lack of funding and community opposition to the project, the project was eventually built. Initially, the plan was to acquire Quonset huts from a prisoner of war camp in Greeley. However, the 4,000 German soldiers living there would remain through the end of that season’s sugar beet harvest. Montgomery Ward stepped up to provide 100 Quonset huts at low cost, but there was a shortage of furniture, appliances, and flooring materials due to the war. Eventually, military surplus huts became available. In addition to the single family Quonset Huts in Veteran’s Village, the college purchased two larger huts for single men’s dormitories (now located at the Environmenal Research Center).
