Re-posted with permission and credit to Gregory Luke: From the ETP/Utilities Board Meeting last night, Q & A section from concerned citizens of Boone and surrounding areas: Here are some of my favorite and most infuriating dances (paraphrased): Q Carbon steel is the one of the most corrosive materials, isn’t that true? A Carbon steel is the most popular material for making pipeline. Q Why’d you choose carbon steel? A It’s the most popular and best. Q So it’s the most popular, but is it the safest? A It’s coated on outside (but not inside). Q What if Iowans tell you to get lost? A We will follow the regulatory process. Q Does that mean you’ll take what you want? A We will follow the regulatory process. Q Are you going to do surface water monitoring? Soil monitoring? A We will do periodic aerial patrols. Q But what about the ground water monitoring if there are small leaks that aren’t detected? A We will do periodic aerial patrols. (People start grumbling, a few shout out to have the question answered) A There will be no ground water or soil monitoring. Q Pipelines are safest, based on what? Environmental, property damage? A Loss of life. Q The company says they’ll put pipeline beneath freeze line… but it seems 24-48in deep isn’t enough. In Iowa the frost depth can reach 7ft. A It will be buried at least 48in deep. (Frost depth has been shown to be 6ft deep on occasion) Q How can you guarantee this oil will be used domestically? Federal law prohibits exporting of crude oil. (Protestors, “they refine it!” People yelling shut-up at protestors.) A Some refined oil will be imported, some exported. Please Share - Its important.
