This is a 4th grade Writing rubric from Seminole County and a teachers remarks about them. _____________ (I speak from a 4th grade perspective -- we should always preface comments with what age were talking about) The truth is teachers cannot be trained to do this stuff because this stuff is not real stuff, makes no sense, and the cognitive dissonance experienced is the proof that there is nothing real about the rubrics, the assignments, or the standards to which they are attached. Children -- normal children (as in Normal Curve) -- learn by doing. These new methods avoid that, so theyre not methods; theyre bullshit. All the data we collect and are supposed to look at to inform our instruction doesnt inform us of anything. Its all meant to overwork us and the kids so we fail so we can be fired and replaced by the more lucrative model of privatization, giant classes and non-teacher teachers. A 4th grade writing rubric? Ever seen the 1st grade one? The fact that they exist frightens me, and should frighten all who care about children. Dont discuss the quality of the rubric. Discuss the efficacy of them. Discuss why you (they?) think we need them (in K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Again, the data we are asked to collect is meaningless in elementary. The data exist to be misused by an oligarch or his agent. All the time wasted making permutations of data is just that -- time wasted. I dont need to see data from a test. I teach 4th grade and see the data in real time -- I am in the same room with the children watching them do the things I have provided for them to do, SO I CAN SEE WHAT THEY NEED FROM ME, SO THEY CAN LEARN STUFF. One does not need all these methods of collecting and sorting data. Actual classroom teaching is all one needs.
