Reaching Up, Reaching Out: You respond to God reaching down to you in worship and praise. But more important than that is a desire to go deeper with God and ensure you are taking the call to live a Jesus-shaped life seriously: If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin (1 John 1:6-7 NIV). Jesus Christ shows you who the Father is, but also shows you who you are and where you are. John’s call to “walk in the light” does not mean you must be sinless and flawless. The light means you are fully aware you are a sinner, and that’s the point! The surprise of this passage is that just such a sinner is not a lost cause, beyond help, but that at just the right moment the companion of our road—who himself is the source of the light which makes us recognize our guilt—now becomes the means of our help which resolves our guilt (Earl Palmer). The Good News is that “purifies us from all sin” is continuous. “Keeps on purifying” would be an equally good translation. If you feel you’ve failed so often over the same sin and you are unworthy to walk in the light or to ask God for fresh forgiveness then John tells you that you can never come too often to God as long as you come in humble penitence and active faith. You must testify to this Good News. Not just to those who do not yet know Jesus but to each other too. It helps us encourage each other and hold each other accountable.
